Hey,

Most people trying to figure out how to earn money remotely start by asking the wrong question. What should I learn? What new skill should I pick up?

Wrong starting point. The right one is: what do I already know how to do that someone would actually pay for?

◆ // THE PLAY

You're Probably Sitting on a Skill You Don't See as One

Here's the trap. If you did something at a job for years, it doesn't feel like a skill to you, it feels like just what you did. That's exactly why you miss it. The stuff that feels obvious to you is the stuff someone else is actively struggling with and would pay to have solved.

Run through these categories honestly, not what sounds impressive, what's actually true:

WHAT YOU'VE ALREADY BEEN PAID TO DO
Any job, any role, strip it down to the actual tasks. Not the title, the tasks. Did you write things people read. Did you manage people or projects. Did you sell anything, even informally. Did you fix things, technical or otherwise, when they broke. Every one of those is a skill someone abroad still needs solved, and most of them can be done from anywhere.

WHAT PEOPLE ALREADY ASK YOU FOR HELP WITH
Think about what friends or family come to you for. Advice on their resume. Help figuring out a spreadsheet. Someone to look at their business idea and tell them the truth. If people already come to you for it for free, that's the clearest signal you have that it's valuable, you just haven't put a price on it yet.

WHAT YOU DO WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT IT
The stuff you're fast at, that other people struggle with, is usually invisible to you because it's effortless. If research that takes someone else three hours takes you thirty minutes, that's not luck, that's a skill, and it's billable.

The mistake is waiting until you feel like an expert before you start charging for something. You don't need to be the best in the world at it. You need to be better at it than the person who needs it done.

For me, it was building websites, custom software, and spotting arbitrage in markets and in real life. It's how I turned small amounts of capital, three and four figures, into six-figure wins. People still ask me about moving to Southeast Asia and about investing in stocks and crypto constantly, that's the whole reason the brand exists, it's just me getting paid for stuff I was already doing for free. Your version of this list is going to look nothing like mine, and it doesn't need to.

◆ // THE NUMBER

90 days

That's roughly the minimum runway it takes to build something from a completely cold start, a new audience, a new blog, a brand new account with no trust yet. If you're starting from zero, that clock is real, and it's not optional.

Here's the shortcut most people miss. If you're using a skill you already have instead of learning a brand new one, you skip the learning curve entirely and go straight to finding the first person to pay you. That doesn't erase the 90 days of trust-building for a brand new audience, but it means you're not also learning the skill at the same time you're trying to sell it, which is where most people burn through their runway before they ever get their first client.

◆ // THE TOOL

Write Down the List Before You Talk Yourself Out of It

Take five minutes right now, before you keep reading. Write down three things you've been paid to do, three things people ask you for help with, and three things you do faster than most people you know. Don't edit it, don't decide yet if it's "enough." Just get it on paper.

That list is your actual starting inventory. Most people skip this step entirely and go straight to learning something new instead of pricing what they already have.

◆ // THE MOVE

This week, pick one thing off your list and find one person who'd pay for it.

Not a business plan. Not a website. One person. A friend of a friend, an old coworker, someone in a Facebook group who's clearly stuck on exactly the thing you're good at. Offer to do it for them, even at a low or discounted rate the first time, just to prove the skill converts to money in a real transaction, not just in your head.

If you get that first yes, you're not starting from zero anymore, you're iterating on something proven. If you're not sure which item on your list is actually worth leading with, that's exactly the kind of thing a consulting call is for, figuring out which of your skills has the fastest path to an actual paying client, not just the most impressive one → expatbuildr.com/consulting

DM me on Instagram @ExpatBuildr with what's on your list. I read every one.

◆ // ONE MORE THING

If you found this newsletter through a recent post about losing money and rebuilding, welcome, that's the real story, and this is the actual answer, not a job title, a real, honest inventory of what you already have and a plan to use it. If you've been here since the earlier issues, this is the piece that was missing, currency, moving, timing, and runway all only matter once there's something real generating income underneath them. This is that thing.
