Hey,
Quick one this week, and a good one to write.
My first client paid me. Consulting went from something I kept talking about to something somebody actually bought, and after the last few months I'm not going to pretend that doesn't feel good.
It also made me realize something. I've been writing to you for weeks about currency, moving, time zones, runway, and skills, and I never asked the most basic question.
What are you actually building?
◆ // THE PLAY
Freedom Needs a Name
Everyone I talk to wants the same thing. Earn in dollars, live somewhere that stretches them. That's the destination.
But freedom isn't a plan. It's the result of one.
The people who get there faster all have one thing in common: they can say what they're building in a single sentence. Not "something online." Not "I'm figuring it out." A specific business, for a specific kind of customer.
That matters because a vague plan can't be tested. You can't fix it, you can't price it, you can't show it to anyone. A named business gives you something to point at, and something to fix when it doesn't work.
Every issue so far covered a piece of this. A cheaper city buys you time. A better exchange rate protects your money. A time zone gap gives you an edge. But none of them tell you what to build. That part is yours.
◆ // THE NUMBER
1
That’s how many paying clients it took to turn consulting from an idea into a business.
Not a hundred. Not a launch. One person who decided the work was worth paying for.
Your number might be one too.
The first step is naming what you’re building. The second is getting someone to pay for it, and that’s the part I help with now.
If you want your first one, book a 60-minute call with me for $150: expatbuildr.com/consulting
◆ // THE TOOL
The One-Sentence Test
Fill this in:
"I'm building ______ for ______ so I can ______."
Three blanks:
The business. What you actually sell or do.
The customer. A specific kind of person or company, not "everyone."
The life it pays for. Where you want to live and what you want to stop trading time for.
Example: "I'm building a bookkeeping service for small clinics so I can live in Cebu on dollars."
If you can fill all three, you have something to test this month.
If you can't, that's the most useful thing you could learn this week. Which blank stopped you tells you exactly what to work on next.
◆ // THE MOVE
Write your one sentence. Then bring it to a 1-on-1 call with me.
It's 60 minutes, $150. We take your sentence and pressure-test it: is the customer specific enough, will they pay, and what's the fastest way to your first paying client. If you're missing a blank, we fill it together.
Book it here: expatbuildr.com/consulting
Not ready for a call? DM me your sentence on Instagram @ExpatBuildr and I'll tell you which blank is the weak one.
